Brushes are expensive. And they also really make or break a good paint job. So if you are taking a break either between coats or during one I recommend washing out the brush and placing it back in the cardboard sleeve.
As for the brush bucket (since you're not painting out of the can, right?), cover it with a square of Press 'N Seal and firmly affix it around the perimeter. It will keep like this for a few hours to overnight. Maybe longer...
Keep the roller in the tray with the handle sticking out the back and hooked on the lip. Then, cover the whole things with two pieces of Press 'N Seal making sure to stick it firmly around the edges and tight around the roller handle.
It will keep like this for quite a while. I'm embarrassed to admin I've come back a week later and found the pant and roller still perfectly usable. But, I don't recommend waiting that long - a few hours to overnight is definitely safe.
Watch out for pets though. My cat LOVES the Press N Seal and will chew, claw and scratch it. I've learned (after spilled paint and messy paws) to keep anything covered out of her reach (which usually means inside a closed cabinet. I bet your dog / children might also find the stuff fascinating...
