Decorating can be hard. Just knowing where and how to start is a challenge. With so many different options, styles and colors it can get overwhelming. Not to mention the daily scrolling you do on Pinterest, Instagram, and Houzz. You like it ALL!
With our guidelines below, we make it simpl e. It starts with getting curious. Ask yourself the questions, do the work and the design will come naturally.
First, look at the space you're looking to decorate. What is the function of the space and how do you want to use it?
For example, looking to redo your living room? Is it more of a conversational space or a TV watching space? Will you be hosting and entertaining friends here or will you be having family game night in this room? Or both?
This will help you decide the type of furniture and layout of those pieces (more on furniture layouts in upcoming posts).
Next, we look at color scheme. This is where you ask, what do I want the space to convey?
Relaxed and chill? Energetic and lively? Warm and cozy? I will go into more details on how colors effect your moods in a later post but picking the right color for the space is crucial.
Lastly, I love using what I already have before filling in with new. Find a piece that is inspirational and meaningful. Maybe a family heirloom or amazing flea market find. Use that to help decide colors and theme.
Our whole kitchen was inspired by my collection of Hadley. My Grandma collected Hadley for years before I was born. Once I was old enough to start having tea parties and playing restaurant, her Hadley became my props. She continued to grow her collection knowing that one day, she would pass them along to me. I now proudly display and use the collection in our kitchen. I pulled the darker blues to use on the cabinets and I pulled the stunning white for the backsplash and counters. The classic blue and white is complete with gold hardware and fixtures.
To make decorating easier, I compiled a list of important questions. Use this as your guide to start the process.
- What is the function of the space?
- How do you want to use the space?
- What do you want the space to convey?
- What inspiration can you pull from?
- What pieces do you already have that you would like to incorporate?
